Brasilien bliver medlem af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium

Republikken Brasilien underskrev i går den formelle tiltrædelsesaftale, der baner vejen for medlemskab af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium (ESO). Efter regeringens ratificering bliver Brasilien det femtende medlemsland og det første uden for Europa.
Ved en ceremoni i Brasilia den 29. december 2010 underskrev den brasilianske minister for videnskab og teknologi, Sergio Machado Rezende og ESO’s generaldirektør, Tim de Zeeuw den formelle tiltrædelsesaftale, der sigter mod at gøre Brasilien til medlem af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium. Brasilien bliver det femtende medlemsland og det første uden for Europa. Da aftalen betyder tiltrædelse af en international konvention, skal aftalen nu fremlægges i det brasilianske parlament til ratificering [1]. Underskrivelsen af aftalen fulgte en enstemmig godkendelse af ESO Rådet under et ekstraordinært møde den 21. december 2010.
”Medlemskabet af ESO vil sætte nyt skub i udviklingen af videnskab, teknologi og innovation i Brasilien, som en del af den betydelige indsats vores regering gør for at sikre landets videre udvikling indenfor disse strategiske områder,” siger Rezende.
Det Europæiske Syd Observatorium har en lang historie med succesfuldt engagement i Sydamerika, siden Chile blev valgt som det bedste sted for ESO’s observationer i 1963. Indtil nu har ingen ikke-europæiske lande dog tiltrådt ESO som medlemsland.
”Brasiliens medlemskab vil give det pulserende brasilianske astronomiske forskningsmiljø fuld adgang til det mest produktive observatorium i verden og åbne muligheder for, at den brasilianske højteknologiske industri kan bidrage til European Extremely Large Telescope projektet. Det vil også bringe nye ressourcer og kompetencer til organisationen på et tidspunkt, hvor de kan yde et væsentligt bidrag til dette spændende projekt,” tilføjer ESO’s generaldirektør, Tim de Zeeuw.
Designfasen af teleskopet til European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) blev for nylig afsluttet, og en større gennemgang er blevet gennemført, hvor alle aspekter af det store projekt er blevet gransket af et internationalt panel af uafhængige eksperter. Panelet er kommet frem til, at E-ELT-projektet teknisk set er klar til at gå ind i konstruktionsfasen. Efter planen bliver der givet grønt lys for konstruktionen af E-ELT i 2011, og når driften starter tidligt i det næste årti, vil europæiske, brasilianske og chilenske astronomer have afgang til dette enorme teleskop.
Formanden for ESO’s styrende organ, Rådet, Laurent Vigroux, siger afslutningsvis: ”Astronomer i Brasilien vil drage fordel af at samarbejde med europæiske kolleger, og naturligvis også ved at have observationstid på ESO’s verdensklasse-observatorier på La Silla og Paranal, samt ALMA, som ESO opfører med sine internationale partnere.”
