ALMA in frosty monochrome
ALMA — the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array — resides high up in Chile's arid and inhospitable Atacama desert region, where it observes the Universe at wavelengths in between the infra-red and radio regions of the spectrum. This enables it to see the cold Universe, objects only a few degrees above absolute zero, allowing astronomers to observe some of the earliest and most distant galaxies in the Universe. The black-and-white gives the antennae and sky a frosty appearance.
