Zaostřeno na Jupiter
Působivý snímek planety Jupiter byl pořízen v infračerveném záření 17. srpna 2008 pomocí přístroje MAD (Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator), prototypu připojenému k dalekohledu ESO/VLT. Záběr ve falešných barvách je kombinací série snímků získaných během 20 minut přes trojici různých filtrů pro vlnové délky 2, 2,14 a 2,16 mikrometru. Ostrost detailů na celém disku je na úrovni rozlišení 0,090“, což je pro tento druh snímků rekord dosažený obdobnými zařízeními ze Země. To odpovídá detailům o rozměrech asi 300 km v atmosféře obří planety. Velká rudá skvrna na tomto záběru není zachycena, během pozorování se nacházela na odvrácené straně planety. Pozorování byla provedena na vlnových délkách infračerveného záření, u kterých v atmosféře Jupiteru dochází ke značné absorpci díky přítomnosti vodíku a metanu. Mimo jiné díky tomu vypadá Jupiter na tomto obrázku dost odlišně, než na co jsme zvyklí u viditelného světla. Absorpce znamená, že sluneční světlo může odrážet pouze zákal ve vysoké atmosféře, ale nikoliv hlouběji ležící oblačnost. Tento zákal se nachází ve velmi stabilní horní vrstvě troposféry Jupiteru, kde se tlak plynu pohybuje kolem 0,15 až 0,3 baru. Promíchávání této stabilní vrstvy je nízké, proto zde mohou drobné částice tvořící zákal přežít dny až roky, v závislosti na jejich velikosti a rychlosti klesání. Kromě toho je poblíž pólu planety vidět ještě výše ležící vrstva oparu (na obrázku světle modrá), která vzniká díky interakci s částicemi zachycenými v silném magnetickém poli Jupiteru.
