SPHERE revela la existencia de discos espirales alrededor de una estrella cercana
El instrumento SPHERE, de ESO, un cazador de planetas instalado en el VLT (Very Large Telescope), en Chile, ha descubierto una estructura inusual alrededor de una estrella cercana adolescente llamada HD 100453.
HD 100453 se encuentra a más de 350 años luz de distancia en la constelación de Centauro y está imbuida en un arremolinado disco de gas y polvo, visible en rojo y blanco en esta imagen. También arremolinados pueden verse los tenues brazos de la espiral que se extienden desde el disco, posiblemente formado debido a la influencia de los planetas ocultos que aún no han sido vistos. Este disco espiral es sorprendentemente simétrico, y es uno de los discos espirales más pequeños jamás observado alrededor de otra estrella, una impresionante demostración de las capacidades de SPHERE.
SPHERE es un buscador de planetas de gran alcance que nos permite observar directamente mundos alienígenas y los discos de polvo en los que se forman alrededor de estrellas de la Vía Láctea. Esto lo hace bloqueando la deslumbrante luz de la estrella, que se encuentra en el centro de la imagen (en lugar del círculo negro, que oculta la estrella y su entorno más cercano). Explorar las regiones alrededor de jóvenes estrellas como HD 100453 puede proporcionar importantes pistas sobre cómo se forman y crecen los planetas y las estrellas en nuestra galaxia.
