Admirando la galaxia
Incluso para el astrónomo más veterano es difícil resistirse a la tentación de tomarse un respiro, durante un apretado plan de observaciones, y levantar la vista hacia el glorioso y rico cielo austral. Esta imagen es un autorretrato obtenido por el astrónomo Alan Fitzsimmons, que captó esta fotografía entre dos sesiones de observación en el Observatorio La Silla de ESO.
Esta atrevida foto muestra el contraste entre una figura sencilla, quieta y oscura sobre la Tierra y el brillante y luminoso cielo nocturno estrellado. En esta imagen, el cielo está dominado por el enorme chorro de estrellas y polvo que adornan el centro de la Vía Láctea, nuestra galaxia anfitriona.
Los observatorios de ESO están ubicados en el desierto de Atacama, en el norte de Chile, una región con muy pocos habitantes, que combina noches muy oscuras con condiciones atmosféricas extremadamente despejadas, factores que, unidos, favorecen unas observaciones de alta calidad.
La Silla es el primer observatorio de ESO. Inaugurado en 1969, alberga varios telescopios con espejos primarios de más de 3,6 metros. Con más de 300 noches claras al año, La Silla es el lugar ideal para alojar instrumentos avanzados de observación, pero también es un lugar fabuloso para, sencillamente, parase y fijar los ojos en el cielo.
