Llega la nieve al desierto de Atacama
El desierto de Atacama es uno de los lugares más secos del mundo. Varios factores contribuyen a sus condiciones áridas. La magnífica cordillera de los Andes y la cordillera de la costa chilena bloquean las nubes procedentes del este y el oeste, respectivamente. Además, las frías Corrientes de Humboldt del litoral del Océano Pacífico, que crean una capa de inversión de aire frío en la costa, dificultan la formación de nubes de lluvia. A esto se suma que la región de alta presión de la zona sudeste del Océano Pacífico crea vientos circulantes que forman anticiclones, lo cual también ayuda a mantener seco el clima del desierto de Atacama. Estas condiciones áridas fueron uno de los motivos principales para que ESO decidiera instalar en Paranal, en el desierto de Atacama, el telescopio VLT (Very Large Telescope). En el Observatorio Paranal, situado en la cima del Cerro Paranal, los niveles de precipitación suelen estar por debajo de los diez milímetros por año, con una humedad a menudo por debajo del 10%. Las condiciones de observación son excelentes, con más de 300 noches claras al año.
Las espléndidas condiciones para las observaciones astronómicas en el desierto de Atacama se ven alteradas en raras ocasiones por el clima. Sin embargo, durante un par de días al año, la nieve visita el desierto de Atacama. Esta imagen muestra una bella panorámica de Cerro Paranal. El VLT se encuentra en el pico de la izquierda, y el telescopio de sondeo VISTA está en el pico que está algo más abajo, un poco a la derecha. El cielo azul demuestra que se trata de otro día claro y soleado. Esta vez, sin embargo, hay algo diferente: una fina capa de nieve ha transformado el paisaje desértico, ofreciéndonos una visión inusual de extraordinaria belleza.
