A haven from the heat

This image reveals the lush indoor garden and swimming pool inside the Paranal Residencia. Here, ESO staff members and astronomers come to relax and take shelter from the arid environment of the Chilean Atacama Desert.

The vertical structure towards the centre of the image is an umbrella that is deployed at sunset and during the night to protect the nearby Paranal Observatory from artificial light from the Residencia.
