The New Technology Telescope on La Silla. The revolutionary 3.6 m ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) has entered into operation in its unusual dome at the La Silla Observatory. The entire dome rotates synchronously with the telescope during the observations. The peculiar shape of the dome resulted from extensive wind-tunnel tests and ensures that there is a minimum of turbulence in the air around the telescope. Together with the actively controlled optics, this guarantees the sharpest possible images.
