Along the highest staircase at the centre of the new building are portraits of some of the former directors general of ESO: Prof. O Heckmann, Prof. A. Blaauw, Prof. l. Woltjer, Prof H. van der Laan, and Prof. R Giacconi, Dr. C. Cesarsky.
