The Offices for Science and the Astronomy Faculty are very pleased to present the 2019 ESO Fellows. Here is an introduction to the Fellows due to start in Garching, Germany later this year.

Gabriela Calistro Rivera
Research Interests: Galaxies and accreting black holes in the early Universe; multiwavelength observations (from the radio to X-rays)
Current Institute: Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands

file

Nicola Gentile Fusillo
Research Interests: White dwarfs, specifically stellar remnants; large area surveys like SDSS and Gaia; large-scale searches for white dwarfs and their spectroscopic follow-up; using select white dwarf systems to study the composition of rocky planetesimals
Current institute: University of Warwick, UK

file

Marianne Heida
Research Interests: Galactic and extragalactic X-ray binaries; using optical and near-infrared observations to identify  donor stars in these systems and constrain the compact object masses; characterisation of the donor stars of a large population of ultra-luminous X-ray sources in order to constrain binary stellar evolution scenarios
Current Institute: Caltech, USA

file

George Lansbury
Research Interests: Extragalactic and (high-energy) X-ray surveys, obscured black hole growth, and the cosmic evolution of AGN / quasars and their host galaxies; multi-wavelength observations from both Space (e.g. NuSTAR) and ground-based facilities (e.g. ESO)
Current Institute: University of Cambridge, UK

file

Tommaso Marchetti
Research Interests: Finding hypervelocity stars in the Gaia catalogue; combining data mining routines and spectroscopic observations to confirm the most interesting candidates and unveiling their ejection location
Current institute: Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands

file

Paulo Miles
Research Interests: Atmospheric characterisation of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs; photometry, spectroscopy and polarimetry in the optical and near-infrared
Current Institute: University of Western Ontario, Canada
