The latest integral field spectrograph (IFS) on the VLT, the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), has recently undergone its first commissioning period - see details in the Release. A second commissioning period will take place in April followed by Science Verification a few months later. MUSE is first offered to the community for observation in Period 94 (October 2014 – March 2015).

The ESO Workshop "3D2014: Gas and stars in galaxies: A multi-wavelength 3D perspective" took place two weeks ago and copies of many of the presentations are available via the workshop programme. In the context of the workshop a flyer detailing the new IFU capabilities of MUSE, KMOS and ALMA was prepared.

The next VLT instrument to be commissioned, the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument (SPHERE), has recently arrived at the Paranal Observatory and also has IFS capabilities (for exoplanet detection).
