Bibliometric study of the world astronomy

Ivan Zolotukhin (Paris Observatory)

Abstract

We present a custom SQL-powered database of the astronomical publications
contained in the NASA Astrophysics Data System (http://adsabs.harvard.edu).
Most of the several million records published between 1950 and 2011 comprise
structured information about titles, abstracts, keywords, and authors with
their affiliations, together with the references to another publications.
SQL engine easily allows to obtain statistically significant estimates of an
arbitrary bibliometric indicators, either for individual researchers, or for
their communities (e.g. national) selected by any of the number of
available criteria. In this talk we analyze several interesting metrics of
publication activity, poorly studied before, as well as discuss quantitative
differences between well-known research communities.
