Applications of general purpose GPU computing in the field of astronomy and related research domains

Gernot Ziegler (NVIDIA)

Abstract

Graphics hardware has in recent years become increasingly programmable, and its massive computing power has made it more and more attractive for uses outside graphics, especially after the introduction of pro-grade GPU computing products.
This talk provides a broad overview over the GPU's current hardware capabilities, its software infrastructure and the broad application domains for GPU computing on the whole. We continue by providing examples from astronomy-specific research projects where GPU usage has generated substantial performance gains in data processing, and sketch for each project how the GPU's specific features were used to solve the necessary computational tasks.
