Una bellezza spesso trascurata
Quest’immagine della settimana mostra la galassia spirale NGC 986, nella costellazione della Fornace. Questa galassia, scoperta nel 1826 dall’astronomo scozzese James Dunlop non è spesso fotografata a causa della sua prossimità con il ricco e famoso Ammasso della Fornace. Il che è un peccato, visto che questa galassia non è solo un fantastico oggetto scientifico, ma è anche molto bella.
Questa galassia si trova ad una distanza di 56 milioni di anni-luce ed è quasi perfettamente vista dall'alto - o come dicono gli astronomi “di faccia”. Questo permette di vedere i due bracci a spirale principali e anche una struttura centrale a forma di barra, composta di stelle e polvere, caratteristiche che la fanno classificare come "galassia spirale barrata".
Le mappature astronomiche del cielo hanno mostrato che circa due terzi di tutte le galassie a spirale contengono una barra, inclusa la Via Lattea. Questo rende NGC 986 il posto perfetto per studiare la struttura delle galassie e scoprire di più anche sulla nostra galassia, che è difficile da studiare dall’interno.
Questa vista con lo strumento FORS, montato sul Very Large Telescope di ESO all’osservatorio di Paranal, nel Cile del nord, fa parte del programma ESO Cosmic Gems programme, un progetto di divulgazione per produrre immagini interessanti, intriganti e visivamente attrattive utilizzando i telescopi di ESO, con finalità educative e di divulgazione pubblica. Questo programma fa uso del tempo di telescopio che non potrebbe essere usato per le osservazioni scientifiche. Tutti i dati raccolti possono anche essere usati per scopo scientifico e sono resi disponibili agli astronomi attraverso l’archivio scientifico di ESO.
