Sterren en schedels: nieuwe ESO-opname toont griezelige nevel

Dit vluchtige overblijfsel van een lang geleden gestorven ster, in de buik van de Walvis, vertoont een verontrustende gelijkenis met een schedel die in de ruimte zweeft. Deze nieuwe, verbazingwekkend gedetailleerde opname van de griezelige Schedelnevel, in prachtige bloeddoorlopen kleuren, is gemaakt met ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Deze planetaire nevel is de eerste waarvan vaststaat dat deze verband houdt met een nauwe dubbelster waar een derde ster omheen cirkelt.
De Schedelnevel, ook bekend als NGC 246, bevindt zich op een afstand van ongeveer 1600 lichtjaar van de aarde in het zuidelijke sterrenbeeld Cetus (de Walvis). Hij ontstond toen een oude zonachtige ster zijn buitenste lagen van zich af schudde en zijn naakte kern – een witte dwerg – achterliet. (Een van de twee sterren die in het centrum van NGC 246 te zien zijn.)
Hoewel deze nevel al eeuwen bekend is, ontdekten astronomen pas in 2014 met behulp van ESO’s VLT dat er naast de witte dwerg en zijn metgezel nog een derde ster in het hart van de Schedelnevel schuilgaat. Deze ster, die op deze foto niet te zien is, is een zwakke rode dwerg die zich nabij de witte dwerg bevindt, op ongeveer vijfhonderd keer de afstand tussen aarde en zon. De rode en de witte dwerg cirkelen als een paar om elkaar heen, en de buitenste ster draait op ongeveer 1900 keer de afstand aarde-zon om dit tweetal heen. Tezamen maken deze drie sterren NGC 246 tot de eerste bekende planetaire nevel met een hiërarchisch drievoudig stersysteem in zijn centrum.
De nieuwe opname van de Schedelnevel, gemaakt met het FORS 2-instrument van ESO-s VLT in de Chileense Atacama-woestijn, legt licht vast dat op de specifieke golflengten van waterstof- en zuurstofgas wordt uitgezonden. Waarnemingen van het licht dat deze elementen uitzenden leveren een schat aan informatie op over de chemische en structurele samenstelling van een object. De foto laat zien waar NGC 246 rijk of arm is aan waterstof (weergegeven in rood) en zuurstof (afgebeeld in lichtblauw).
De opname is gemaakt in het kader van het ‘Cosmic Gems’-programma van ESO – een initiatief waarbij interessante, intrigerende of visueel aantrekkelijke objecten voor educatieve of publicitaire doeleinden met ESO-telescopen worden gefotografeerd. Dit programma maakt gebruik van ‘telescooptijd’ die niet geschikt is voor wetenschappelijke waarnemingen. Voor het geval de verzamelde gegevens ook bruikbaar zijn voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden, worden ze via het wetenschappelijke archief van ESO ook ter beschikking gesteld van astronomen.

ESO voert een ambitieus programma uit, gericht op het ontwerpen, bouwen en beheren van grote sterrenwachten die astronomen in staat stellen om belangrijke wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen te doen. Ook speelt ESO een leidende rol bij het bevorderen en organiseren van samenwerking op astronomisch gebied. ESO beheert drie waarnemingslocaties van wereldklasse in Chili: La Silla, Paranal en Chajnantor. Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) en haar toonaangevende Very Large Telescope Interferometer, evenals twee surveytelescopen – VISTA, die in het infrarood werkt, en de op zichtbare golflengten opererende VLT Survey Telescope. Ook op Paranal zal ESO onderkomen bieden aan en het beheer voeren over de Cherenkov Telescope Array South, ’s werelds grootste en meest gevoelige observatorium van gammastraling. ESO speelt tevens een belangrijke partnerrol bij twee faciliteiten op Chajnantor, APEX en ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. En op Cerro Armazones, nabij Paranal, bouwt ESO de 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope, de ELT, die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
