De piraat van de zuidelijke hemel

Deze foto van het actieve stervormingsgebied NGC 2467 – ook wel de Doodshoofd-met-gekruiste-beenderen-nevel genoemd – is even onheilspellend als mooi. De kleurrijke opname van stof, gas en heldere jonge sterren, die door de zwaartekracht bijeen worden gehouden in de vorm van een grijnzend doodshoofd, is vastgelegd met het FORS-instrument van de Very Large Telescope (VLT) van ESO. Hoewel de telescopen van ESO doorgaans worden gebruikt voor het verzamelen van wetenschappelijke gegevens, kunnen ze ook foto’s zoals deze maken, die mooi zijn van zichzelf.
Je hebt niet veel fantasie nodig om te begrijpen waar de merkwaardige bijnaam van NGC 2467 vandaan komt. Deze jonge, heldere formatie lijkt sterk op een dreigend hol gezicht, waarvan hier alleen de gapende mond te zien is. NGC 2467 verschuilt zich in het sterrenbeeld Puppis, dat in het Nederlands ‘Achtersteven’ heet – het verhoogde achterste deel van een schip.
Deze nevelige verzameling van sterrenhopen is de kraamkamer van talrijke sterren, waar een overmaat aan waterstofgas als grondstof voor de vorming van sterren diende. In feite kijken we naar meerdere nevels, waarvan de bijbehorende sterrenhopen met verschillende snelheden bewegen. Het is slechts toeval dat deze nevels vanuit de aarde gezien op één lijn lijken te staan, waardoor de sterren en het gas een menselijke schedel vormen. Dit levendige beeld mag astronomen dan wel niets nieuws vertellen, maar het biedt ons een mooi kijkje in de kolkende zuidelijke hemel, waar zich – onzichtbaar voor het menselijk oog – van alles afspeelt.
Puppis is een van de drie sterrenbeelden aan de zuidelijke hemel die nautische namen hebben gekregen. Tezamen vormen zij het voormalige sterrenbeeld Argo Navis (Schip Argo), dat genoemd is naar de mythologische Jason en de Argonauten. Vanwege zijn onhandig grote omvang is dit sterrenbeeld later in drieën gedeeld: Carina (Kiel), Vela (Zeilen) en Puppis, waar de hier afgebeelde nevel deel van uitmaakt. Hoewel hij te boek staat als een heldhaftig figuur, is Jason nog het bekendst om zijn diefstal van het Gulden Vlies. In zekere zin maakt NGC 2467 dus deel uit van een enorm piratenschip – een gepast onderkomen voor de Doodshoofd-met-gekruiste-beenderen-nevel.
Deze foto is gemaakt in het kader van het ‘Cosmic Gems’-programma van ESO een initiatief waarbij interessante, intrigerende of visueel aantrekkelijke objecten voor educatieve of publicitaire doeleinden met ESO-telescopen worden gefotografeerd. Dit programma maakt gebruik van ‘telescooptijd’ die niet geschikt is voor wetenschappelijke waarnemingen. Alle verzamelde gegevens, die ook bruikbaar kunnen zijn voor wetenschappelijke doeleinden, staan via ESO’s wetenschappelijke archief ter beschikking van astronomen.

ESO beheert drie waarnemingslocaties van wereldklasse in Chili: La Silla, Paranal en Chajnantor. Op Paranal staan ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) en haar toonaangevende Very Large Telescope Interferometer, evenals twee surveytelescopen – VISTA, die in het infrarood werkt, en de op zichtbare golflengten opererende VLT Survey Telescope. ESO speelt tevens een belangrijke partnerrol bij twee faciliteiten op Chajnantor, APEX en ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. En op Cerro Armazones, nabij Paranal, bouwt ESO de 39-meter Extremely Large Telescope, de ELT, die ‘het grootste oog op de hemel’ ter wereld zal worden.
