Sterrenhoop NGC 2547 onder de loep

Deze mooie samenscholing van heldere blauwe sterren is de sterrenhoop NGC 2547, een groep pas gevormde sterren in het zuidelijke sterrenbeeld Zeilen. Deze opname is gemaakt met de Wide Field Imager van de 2,2-meter MPG/ESO-telescoop van de ESO-sterrenwacht op La Silla in Chili.
Het heelal is al oud: zijn leeftijd wordt geschat op 13,8 miljard jaar. En ons sterrenstelsel, de Melkweg, is niet veel jonger – sommige van zijn sterren zijn meer dan 13 miljard jaar oud (eso0425). Toch gebeurt hier nog van alles: nieuwe objecten worden geboren en andere worden verwoest. Op deze foto is een verzameling nieuwkomers te zien: de jonge sterren die de sterrenhoop NGC 2547 vormen.
Maar hoe oud zijn deze kosmische jonkies precies? Hoewel hun precieze leeftijd onzeker blijft, schatten astronomen dat de sterren van NGC 2547 20 tot 35 miljoen jaar oud zijn. Dat klinkt helemaal niet zo jong, totdat je bedenkt dat onze zon 4,6 miljard jaar oud is en nog niet eens van middelbare leeftijd is. Dat betekent dat als je de zon voorstelt als iemand van 40, de heldere sterren op de foto baby's van drie maanden oud zijn.
De meeste sterren ontstaan niet in eenzaamheid, maar in rijke sterrenhopen van enkele tientallen tot duizenden sterren. Hoewel NGC 2547 vele hete, blauwe sterren bevat – een duidelijk teken van jeugd – zitten er ook een paar gele of rode sterren tussen die al tot zogeheten rode reuzen zijn geëvolueerd. Open sterrenhopen als deze bestaan doorgaans maar relatief kort: binnen enkele honderden miljoenen jaren vallen ze uiteen doordat de sterren waaruit ze bestaan uiteendrijven.
Sterrenhopen spelen een sleutelrol bij het onderzoek van de levensloop van sterren. De leden van een sterrenhoop zijn allemaal ongeveer op hetzelfde moment uit hetzelfde materiaal ontstaan, wat het makkelijker maakt om de effecten van andere stellaire eigenschappen te onderzoeken.
De sterrenhoop NGC 2547 staat in het zuidelijke sterrenbeeld Zeilen, op ongeveer 1500 lichtjaar van de aarde, en is helder genoeg om met een verrekijker waarneembaar te zijn. Hij werd in 1751 tijdens een astronomische expeditie naar Kaap de Goede Hoop in Zuid-Afrika ontdekt door de Franse astronoom Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, die een telescoopje met een lens van minder dan twee centimeter gebruikte.
Tussen de heldere sterren op deze foto zijn nog tal van andere objecten te zien, zeker wanneer je inzoomt. Veel daarvan zijn zwakke of verder weg staande sterren van de Melkweg, maar andere vertonen zich als vage, langgerekte vlekjes: dat zijn sterrenstelsels die miljoenen lichtjaren verder weg staan dan de sterren van NGC 2547.

De beste schatting van de huidige leeftijd van het heelal komt uit op 13,772 ± 0,059 miljard jaar.

ESO is ook de Europese partner van de revolutionaire telescoop ALMA, het grootste astronomische project van dit moment. Daarnaast bereidt ESO momenteel de bouw voor van de 39-meter Europese Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope (E-ELT), die 'het grootste oog op de hemel' ter wereld zal worden.
