Une boule de feu tombant sur l'ALMA

Cette magnifique nouvelle image, prise lors d'un time-lapse au Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), est une autre photographie spectaculaire en ultra haute définition de l'ESO Ultra HD Expedition. L'ALMA, situé à 5000 mètres d'altitude sur le plateau de Chajnantor, dans les Andes chiliennes, est la deuxième destination des quatre ambassadeurs photo de l'ESO[1] pour leur voyage de 17 jours. Les ambassadeurs sont équipés d'outils Ultra HD de pointe pour les aider à capturer la véritable majesté des sites comme celui qui est présenté ici [2][3].

 

Certaines des 66 antennes de haute précision qui composent l'ALMA sont visibles ici, avec des paraboles pointées vers le ciel, étudiant les nuages froids de l'espace interstellaire et scrutant les profondeurs du passé pour découvrir nos mystérieuses origines cosmiques.

 

Le spectaculaire javelot de lumière au-dessus du réseau ALMA est une étoile filante, qui traverse l'image en une bande de couleurs vives. Vert émeraude, or et faibles teintes cramoisies brillent de tous leurs feux lorsque le météore se consume en entrant dans l'atmosphère terrestre et en effectuant son ardent voyage dans le ciel. La boule de feu à grande vitesse - qui est en réalité un petit grain de roche provenant de l'espace interplanétaire - interagit avec l'atmosphère qu'elle réchauffe, vaporisant les couches superficielles du météore, qui sont laissées derrière dans une traînée lumineuse. Ces traînées disparaissent en quelques secondes, mais sont capturées ici par un simple clic de bouton.

 

L'étoile la plus brillante de la constellation de la Vierge (The Virgo), connue sous le nom de Spica, et notre planète voisine Mars brillent au centre de l'image - spectateurs cosmiques de cette descente foudroyante alors qu'elles s'élèvent au-dessus de l'horizon.

 

L'Ultra HD Expedition a débuté à Santiago au Chili le 25 mars 2014. Cette image a été prise lors de la huitième nuit de l'équipe sur le plateau de Chajnantor. Ils se trouvent actuellement à l'observatoire La Silla, la première installation astronomique de l'ESO au Chili, et demain, après une dernière nuit, ils feront enfin le long voyage de retour. Le contenu Ultra HD gratuit obtenu lors de cette expédition sera bientôt disponible en ligne, car l'ESO fournit des images Ultra HD nettes et époustouflantes - rapprochant l'Univers plus que jamais. Cette image a été prise par Christoph Malin, ambassadeur photo de l'ESO et directeur de la photographie en temps réel.
