En spraglet komsammen af midaldrende stjerner

Her er den klare stjernehob NGC 3532 i flotte farver. Nogen stjerner stråler i varmt blåligt lys, og mange af de tungere er blevet til røde kæmper med et rigt orange skær. Det er La Silla-teleskopet MPG/ESO 2,2m, som har fanget den spraglede flok.

NGC 3532 er en klar, åben stjernehob omkring 1300 lysår fra os, i stjernebilledet Carina (Kølen). Nogen kalder hoben for "Ønskebrønden", fordi den med lidt fantasi måske kan ligne sølvmønter, som er kastet i en brønd. Andre kalder den "Fodbold-hoben", men om det er er en brugbar sammenligning afhænger nok af, på hvilken side af Atlanten, man befinder sig! Navnet kommer nemlig af den ovale form, som kunne ligne en oval rugbybold.

Man kan let se stjernehoben med det blotte øje fra Jordens sydlige halvkugle. Franskmanden Nicolas Louis de Lacaille opdagede den under et ophold i Sydafrika i 1752, og tre år senere blev den indskrevet i kataloget over hobe. Det er en af himlens mest iøjnefaldende åbne stjernehobe.

Stjernehoben NGC 3532 dækker et område på himlen, som er næsten dobbelt så stort som fuldmånen. John Herschel beskrev hoben som rig på dobbeltstjerner. Han nævnte, at han kunne se "adskillige elegante dobbeltstjerner" under sit ophold i det sydlige afrika i 1830'erne. Af nyere interesse, men stadig historisk er, at det var det første himmelobjekt, som blev observeret med NASAs og ESAs Hubble Rumteleskop, den 20. maj 1990.

Stjernehoben er omkring 300 millioner år gammel. I sammenligning med andre åbne stjernehobe gør det NGC 3532 til en midaldrende hob[1]. De stjerner i hoben, som fra starten havde gennemsnitlige masser, skinner stadig klart med blå-hvide farver, men de tungere stjerner har nu opbrugt deres forsyninger af hydrogenbrændsel, så de har udviklet sig til røde kæmpestjerner. Som følge af det, er hoben rig på både blå og orange stjerner. De allertungeste af de originale stjerner er allerede igennem deres korte, men strålende liv, så de er eksploderet som supernovaer for længe siden. Der findes også utallige svagere, næsten upåagtede stjerner med lav masse. De har længere liv, og de skinner med gule eller rødlige farvetoner. I alt indeholder NGC 3532 omkring 400 stjerner.

Hoben ser man på baggrund af en egn af Mælkevejen, som er meget tæt befolket med stjerner. Også noget lysende rød hydrogengas kan ses, og der er lette striber af støv, som blokerer for udsynet til endnu fjernere stjerner. Støvet og gassen hænger nok ikke sammen med selve hoben, for så vidt vi ved, er denne hob gammel nok til at have renset alt stoffet i omegnen bort for længe siden.

[1] Stjerner, som vejer mange gange mere end Solen lever kun få millioner år. Vi forventer, at Solen vil leve endnu 10 milliarder år, og de lette stjerner har en forventet levetid på flere hundrede milliarder år - hvilket er meget mere end Universets nuværende alder.
