Atomer-for-fred: et galaktisk sammenstød i aktion

Astronomer fra det Europæiske Syd Observatorium har lavet et spektakulært nyt billede af den berømte galakse ved navn Atomer-for-fred (Atoms-for-Peace, NGC 7252). Dette galaktiske trafikuheld, der er blevet dannet ved et sammenstød mellem to galakser, giver astronomer en fremragende mulighed for at studere, hvordan sammensmeltningen af galakser påvirker udviklingen af galakser i universet.
Atomer-for-fred er det pudsige navn, der er givet til et par vekselvirkende, sammensmeltende galakser, der ligger omkring 220 millioner lysår væk i stjernebilledet Aquarius (Vandmanden). Den er også kendt som NGC 7252 og Arp 226, og er lige netop lysstærk nok til at kunne ses af amatørastronomer som en meget lyssvag lille tågeplet. Dette meget dybe billede er lavet med ESO’s Wide Field Imager, der sidder på MPG/ESO 2,2 meter teleskopet på ESO’s La Silla-observatorium i Chile.
En galaksekollision er en af de vigtigste processer, der påvirker galaksers udvikling i universet. Ved at studere dem får vi vigtig viden om galaktisk slægtskab. Heldigvis er sådanne kollisioner langtrukne begivenheder, der varer hundreder af millioner af år, hvilket giver astronomer masser af tid til at observere dem.
Dette billede af Atomer-for-fred er et øjebliksbillede af kollisionens kaos i fuldt flor set på en baggrund rig på fjerne galakser. Resultaterne af det indviklede samspil af tyngdepåvirkninger kan ses på formerne af halerne lavet af strømme af stjerner, gas og støv. Billedet viser også de utrolige skaller, der er blevet dannet ved at gas og stjerner er blevet revet ud af de kolliderende galakser og har svøbt sig om deres fælles kerne. Mens meget materiale er blevet slynget ud i rummet, er andre områder blevet presset sammen, hvilket har udløst udbrud af stjernedannelse. Som resultat er der blevet dannet hundredvis af meget unge stjernehobe, omkring 50 til 500 millioner år gamle, der muligvis kan være forgængerne til kuglehobe.
Atomer-for-fred kan være en forsmag på vores egen galakses skæbne. Astronomer forudser, at om 3 til 4 milliarder år vil Mælkevejen og Andromedagalaksen kollidere, i vid udstrækning som det er sket for Atomer-for-fred. Men gå ikke i panik: Afstanden mellem stjernerne i en galakse er stor, så det er usandsynligt, at Solen vil ende i et frontalt sammenstød med en anden stjerne i forbindelse med sammensmeltningen.
Objektets pudsige navn har en interessant historie. I december 1953 holdt præsident Eisenhower en tale, der blev kald atomer for fred (Atoms for Peace). Temaet var at fremme atomkraft til fredelige formål – et særlig varmt emne på det tidspunkt. Denne tale og den konference, hvor den blev holdt, sendte bølger gennem det videnskabelige miljø og videre ud i en sådan grad, at NGC 7252 blev navngivet Atomer-for-fred-galaksen. På flere måder er dette pudsigt nok passende: Den underlige form, vi kan se, er resultatet af to galaksers sammensmeltning, der frembringer noget nyt og storslået, lidt ligesom det er tilfældet i kernefusion (sammensmeltning af atomkerner). Desuden ligner de enorme buer et diagram fra en lærebog af elektroner, der kredser om en atomkerne.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 42 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
