Nye stjerner i sprøjt eller som døgnbrændere
Det her er en af de 74 nære galakser, hvor områder med stjernedannelse er blevet observeret i den seneste tid med Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array - ALMA. Målet er et overbliksarbejde med titlen Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (forkortet til PHANGS). Indtil videre er der observeret omkring 100 000 af disse områder med en samlet observationstid på over 750 timer. ALMA har en fremragende opløsningsevne, og det er nok til at kunne studere disse områder i detaljer. Vi ser, at nogle områder sprøjter nye stjerner i stort antal frem, mens andre udvikler sig mere gradvist.
Det var forventet, at der er en stor variation i måderne, som stjerner dannes på, og det var motivationen bag dette enorme projekt. Længe har der været fremsat teorier til forklaring af, hvordan og hvorfor disse forskelle findes, og nogle af teorierne bygger på observationer i vores egen hjemmegalakse; Mælkevejen - det drejer sig om værdier som størrelse, alder og indre dynamik - men det har indtil nu ikke være muligt at sammenholde teorierne med observationer, fordi der ikke har været højopløsningsdata til rådighed.
Allerede nu har den store og varierede datamængde fra PHANGS hjulpet astronomerne til at forstå meget mere på området, selvom oversigtsundersøgelsen kun til nu er en tredjedel færdig. I alt er det målet med projektet at observere mere end 300 000 stjernedannelsesområder, og i den sidste ende forventes det, at vi får en meget bedre viden om, hvordan en given galakses egenskaber har indflydelse på, hvordan den danner sine nye stjerner.
