Kosmisk ildkugle falder over ALMA
Dette smukke billede er endnu et dramatisk foto i Ultra High Definition fra ESOs Ultra HD Expedition. Det blev taget som del af billedserie til en tidsforkortet sekvens ved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). ALMA er det andet rejsemål for ESOs fire foto-ambassadører [1] under deres 17 dage lange tur. ALMA ligger 5000 meter over havet på den fjerntliggende og øde Chajnantor-højslette i de chilenske Andesbjerge. Ambassadørerne medbringer det nyeste Ultra-HD-udstyr, der hjælper dem med at fange den storslåede skønhed på de steder, de besøger [2] [3]. Nogle af de 66 højpræcisions-antenner, der udgør ALMA, ses her med deres paraboler rettet mod himlen, mens de undersøger de kolde skyer i rummet mellem stjernerne og kigger langt tilbage i tiden til vores mystiske, kosmiske oprindelse.
Det spektakulære spyd af lys over ALMAs antenner er et stjerneskud, der farvestrålende skærer gennem billedet. Mens meteoret passerer ind i Jordens atmosfære og brænder op, blusser det op med farver som smaragdgrøn, guld og svagt blårød. Den lynhurtige ildkugle er faktisk en lille stenstump fra rummet, der opvarmes kraftigt ved mødet med atmosfæren. De yderste lag af meteoret fordamper og danner et glødende spor efter den. Sporet forsvinder efter nogle få sekunder, men er her fanget med en enkelt tryk på en knap.
Spica, der er den klareste stjerne i stjernebilledet Virgo (Jomfruen), og vores naboplanet Mars skinner klart i midten af billedet. De er kosmiske tilskuere til dette flammende fald, mens de stiger op over horisonten.
ESOs Ultra HD Expedition begyndte den 25. marts 2014 i Santiago, Chile. Billedet her blev taget under holdets ottende nat på Chajnantor-højsletten. Lige nu befinder de sig på La Silla-observatoriet, der er ESOs første facilitet i Chile. I morgen efter en sidste nat på Chajnantor, vil de endelig tage den lange rejse hjem. Snart vil gratis Ultra-HD indhold være tilgængeligt online, når ESO leverer knivskarpe, forbløffende billeder i UltraHD – og dermed bringer Universet tættere på end nogensinde før.
