Het hart van Mira A en zijn partner
Door rode reuzensterren te bestuderen leren sterrenkundigen over de toekomst van onze zon, en hoe vorige generaties sterren materie in het universum hebben verspreid die nodig is voor het ontstaan van leven. Een van bekendste rode reuzensterren aan de hemel is Mira A. Hij maakt deel uit van het dubbbelstersysteem Mira dat op 400 lichtjaar afstand van de aarde staat. Op deze foto onthult ALMA Mira’s geheime leven.
Mira A is een oude ster die materie uitspuwt dat vervolgens in het heelal wordt recycled. Mira A’s partner, Mira B, draait op twee keer de afstand Zon-Neptunus om hem heen.
Mira A heeft een langzame sterrenwind die de verdeling van omringende materie beïnvloedt. ALMA heeft nu bevestigd dat Mira A’s partner een compacte witte dwerg is, met een sterke en snelle sterrenwind.
Mira A en Mira B zijn lang geleden begonnen aan het vormen van hun vreemde en mooie omgeving. Nieuwe waarnemingen laten zien dat de sterrenwinden fascinerende, prachtige en complexe nevels hebben gevormd. De opmerkelijke hartvormige bel in het centrum is in de afgelopen 400 jaar gemaakt door Mira B’s energetische wind.
Door sterren zoals Mira A en Mira B te bestuderen hopen wetenschappers te ontdekken hoe dubbelsterren in de Melkweg verschillen van enkele sterren in het teruggeven van materie aan het stellaire ecosysteem van de Melkweg. Ondanks hun grote onderlinge afstand hebben Mira A en zijn partner een sterk effect op elkaar, en demonstreren ze hoe dubbelsterren elkaars omgeving kunnen beïnvloeden.
Astronomen hebben ALMA en andere telescopen gezien dat andere oude sterren ook bizarre omgevingen hebben. Het is niet altijd duidelijk of de sterren alleen zijn net als onze zon, of dubbelsterren zijn zoals Mira.
