Installing Scisoft VII on other Linux distributions

Scisoft VII (and versions 7.N) was built on Fedora Core 6 and depends on Fedora/RedHat specific packages, but it is possible to install it on non-Fedora distributions:

Scientific Linux 5.0

Scisoft VII installs without modifications on Scientifc Linux 5 but you will need to install a few RPMs by hand as they are needed by Scisoft but not available on Scientific Linux's repositories:

rpm -ivh ftp://ftp.eso.org/scisoft/scisoft7/linux/sl5-extras/SDL_image-1.2.5-4.fc6.i386.rpm \ ftp://ftp.eso.org/scisoft/scisoft7/linux/sl5-extras/SDL_ttf-2.0.8-2.fc6.i386.rpm \ ftp://ftp.eso.org/scisoft/scisoft7/linux/sl5-extras/lesstif-0.95.0-20.fc6.i386.rpm

You can then proceed with the normal installation, from the DVD or from the ESO FTP, for more details see the installation instructions
