ELT M1 Segments

The primary mirror (M1) of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is currently under production. It will be composed of 798 hexagonal segments, which will be assembled to form a single large mirror with a diameter of 40 meters.

During the manufacturing process, the shape of each segment must be precisely measured to ensure that the final M1 mirror meets the required surface specifications. The goal of this internship will be to analyse the metrology data of the M1 segments and identify any potential deviations from the specified surface geometry.

This work requires a strong understanding of optics, proficiency in Python programming, and an interest in data analysis. There may also be an opportunity to visit the production facility in France where the M1 segments are being manufactured.
