The VLT under construction

Staring down the neck of a crane, this image from 1996 provides an aerial view of ESO’s Paranal Observatory, home of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), then under construction in the Chilean Atacama Desert. The telescope dome closest to the camera, the Unit Telescope UT1 (Antu), captured its first image of the cosmos two years later in 1998.
