A prism is used to spread light into its constituent colours
This short animation demonstrates that a prism spreads white light out into its constituent colours. Known as a spectrum, the colours are normally combined to appear to our eyes as white light. By spreading out the light from different astronomical objects, astronomers can learn a great deal about the material that object is made of, and how it is moving in space.
