Andreas Kaufer sarà il prossimo Direttore Generale dell'ESO

Il Consiglio dell'Osservatorio Europeo Australe (ESO) ha nominato Andreas Kaufer come prossimo Direttore Generale dell'ESO. Kaufer, attualmente Direttore Operativo dell'ESO, subentrerà a Xavier Barcons, che manterrà la carica di Direttore Generale fino alla fine di agosto 2026.
"Siamo lieti che Andreas Kaufer abbia accettato la carica di prossimo Direttore Generale dell'ESO. Avendo guidato le operazioni dell'ESO per oltre 17 anni, è la persona ideale per guidare l'organizzazione nei prossimi anni, che vedranno il completamento dell'ELT (Extremely Large Telescope) dell'ESO e la raccolta di idea per il futuro programma innovativo dell'ESO", afferma il Presidente del Consiglio dell'ESO, Tom Ray.
E aggiunge: "Sono grato a Xavier Barcons per aver guidato instancabilmente questa organizzazione dal settembre 2017 e perchè continuerà a farlo nei prossimi mesi. Ha garantito enormi progressi in una varietà di progetti dell'ESO, in particolare nella costruzione dell'ELT, affrontando efficacemente numerose sfide".
Andreas Kaufer, nato a Heidelberg, in Germania, subentrerà a Xavier Barcons a settembre 2026. Kaufer ha conseguito un dottorato di ricerca in astronomia presso l'Università di Heidelberg nel 1996 e ha poi lavorato presso l'Osservatorio Statale di Heidelberg, costruendo strumenti astronomici e svolgendo ricerche nel campo delle atmosfere variabili delle stelle massicce e dell'evoluzione chimica delle galassie. È entrato a far parte dell'ESO nel 1999, contribuendo inizialmente all'avvio delle operazioni del VLT (Very Large Telescope), allora appena costruito. È diventato Direttore dell'Osservatorio di La Silla e Paranal nel 2006 e dal 2008 è Direttore delle Operazioni dell'ESO, ruolo in cui è responsabile di tutto il complesso delle operazioni degli osservatori dell'ESO in Cile e del segmento europeo del programma ALMA.
"Sono veramente lieto che il Consiglio dell'ESO abbia scelto Andreas Kaufer per guidare l'ESO nei prossimi anni", commenta Barcons. "Avendo lavorato a stretto contatto con lui durante il mio mandato, so che Andreas è un leader molto capace, affidabile, visionario e umile, estremamente dedito a questa organizzazione. Senza dubbio guiderà al meglio l'ESO attraverso i successi e le sfide che i prossimi anni gli riserveranno."

Non vedo l'ora di scoprire cosa porterà la ricerca per il futuro programma dell'ESO e di lavorare insieme al personane dell'ESO, di gande impegno e di livello mondiale, in Cile e in Germania, nei prossimi anni."

Sul Paranal, l’ESO gestisce il VLT (Very Large Telescope) e il VLTI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer), così come due telescopi per survey, VISTA, che lavora nell'infrarosso, e VST (VLT Survey Telescope) in luce visibile. Sempre a Paranal l'ESO ospiterà e gestirà la schiera meridionale di telescopi di CTA, il Cherenkov Telescope Array Sud, il più grande e sensibile osservatorio di raggi gamma del mondo. Insieme con partner internazionali, l’ESO gestisce APEX e ALMA a Chajnantor, due strutture che osservano il cielo nella banda millimetrica e submillimetrica. A Cerro Armazones, vicino a Paranal, stiamo costruendo "il più grande occhio del mondo rivolto al cielo" - l'ELT (Extremely Large Telescope, che significa Telescopio Estremamente Grande) dell'ESO. Dai nostri uffici di Santiago, in Cile, sosteniamo le operazioni nel paese e collaboriamo con i nostri partner e la società cileni.
