Brasile in procinto di entrare nel Osservatorio Europeo Meridionale

La Repubblica federativa del Brasile ha firmato l'accordo formale di adesione per diventare uno Stato membro della European Southern Observatory (ESO). A seguito della ratifica parlamentare il Brasile diventerà il quindicesimo Stato membro e il primo extraeuropeo.
Il 29 dicembre 2010, con una cerimonia a Brasilia, il ministro brasiliano di Stato per la Scienza e la Tecnologia, Sergio Machado Rezende e il direttore generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw hanno firmato l'accordo di adesione formale al fine di rendere il Brasile uno Stato membro dello European Southern Observatory. Il Brasile diventerà il quindicesimo Stato membro, il primo al di fuori dell'Europa. Dato che con l'accordo si intende l'adesione ad una convenzione internazionale, questo deve essere ora sottoposto al Parlamento brasiliano per la ratifica [1]. La firma dell’accordo fa seguito all'approvazione unanime da parte del Consiglio dell’ESO avvenuta nel corso di una riunione straordinaria svoltasi il 21 dicembre 2010.
"Partecipare all’ESO darà nuovo impulso allo sviluppo della scienza, della tecnologia e dell'innovazione in Brasile, in coerenza con gli sforzi considerevoli che il nostro governo sta facendo per mantenere il paese tra i più avanzati in questi settori strategici", ha dichiarato Rezende.
L'European Southern Observatory ha una lunga storia di partnership con il Sud America, da quando il Cile è stato selezionato come il miglior sito per i suoi osservatori nel 1963. Fino ad ora, tuttavia, nessun paese non europeo ha aderito all’ESO in qualità di Stato membro.
"L'adesione del Brasile darà alla vivace comunità brasiliana astronomica pieno accesso agli osservatorio più produttivi del mondo e creerà opportunità per l’industria brasiliana ad alta tecnologia, contribuendo al progetto europeo Extremely Large Telescope. Ne deriveranno nuove risorse e competenze per l'organizzazione e, al momento giusto, per il Brasile fornendo un importante contributo a questo entusiasmante progetto ", ha aggiunto il direttore generale dell'ESO, Tim de Zeeuw.
La fase di progettazione del telescopio European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) è stata recentemente completata. E’ stata condotta una profonda verifica del progetto stesso in quanto ogni suo aspetto è stato esaminato da una giuria internazionale di esperti indipendenti. Il panel ha rilevato che il progetto E-ELT è tecnicamente pronto per entrare nella fase di costruzione. Il via libera per la costruzione di E-ELT è prevista per il 2011 e quando le operazioni di avvio avranno inizio nel prossimo decennio, astronomi europei, brasiliani e cileni avranno accesso a questo telescopio gigante.
Il presidente del Consiglio dell'ESO, Laurent Vigroux, ha concluso: "Gli astronomi in Brasile potranno collaborare con i colleghi europei e, naturalmente, potranno avere disponibilità di utilizzo degli osservatori di livello mondiale dell'ESO posti a La Silla e a Paranal, nonché di ALMA , che ESO sta costruendo con i suoi partner internazionali ".

[1] Dopo la ratifica di adesione del Brasile, gli Stati membri ESO saranno Austria, Belgio, Brasile, Repubblica Ceca, Danimarca, Francia, Finlandia, Germania, Italia, Paesi Bassi, Portogallo, Spagna, Svezia, Svizzera e Regno Unito.
