SPHERE mappa la superficie di Ceres
Queste immagini, riprese a due settimane di distanza, mostrano i due emisferi di Ceres e forniscono le migliori osservazioni da terra di sempre di questo pianeta nano. Sono state riprese con lo strumento SPHERE al Very Large Telescope di ESO e fanno parte di un progetto iniziato a metà luglio 2015 che mira a creare una mappa polarimetrica della superficie dell’oggetto.
Orbitando nella cintura degli asteroidi tra Marte e Giove, una regione conosciuta come la cintura principale, Ceres è stato il primo asteroide scoperto nel 1801 ed è il più grande asteroide della Cintura Principale. È il più grande serbatoio di acqua nei dintorni della Terra. Si pensa che la maggior parte di quest’acqua esista nella forma di ghiaccio d’acqua nel mantello dell’oggetto.
La superficie del pianeta nano ha circa la dimensione dell’India e svariate intriganti macchie brillanti sono visibili in queste nuove immagini. Queste macchie misteriose sono state anche osservate da vicino dalla sonda della NASA Dawn, al momento in orbita attorno a Ceres. Gli astronomi hanno indagato sulla loro natura, ma essa rimane un mistero. Si spera tuttavia che, confrontando i dati ottenuti da SPHERE con le immagini che Dawn sta mandando sulla Terra, gli astronomi saranno presto capaci di risolvere l’enigma di Ceres.
