Velocità di 5634 galassie meridionali
Questo diagramma fornisce una panoramica delle velocità di 5634 singole galassie che sono state misurate durante l'ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS) nelle direzioni di 107 ammassi Abell ricchi e nelle vicinanze. Ogni grafico a barre si riferisce a un singolo ammasso, la cui designazione è mostrata a sinistra, insieme al numero totale di raduni di redshift galattici misurati per il'ammasso.
Ogni linea verticale rappresenta una galassia e la posizione nella barra indica il valore misurato della sua velocità in base alla scala in basso. Le galassie che mostrano linee di emissione nel loro spettro sono indicate da linee verticali tratteggiate; le altre sono completamente disegnati.
Gli ammassi di Abell ricchi appaiono come mucchi di galassie in cui le singole velocità differiscono solo a causa dei moti interni nell'ammasso, così che le galassie sono molto vicine nei grafici a barre. Tali distribuzioni altamente raggruppate sono osservate per la maggior parte degli ammassi studiati qui. Ciò significa che circa il 90 percento degli ammassi di Abell ricchi nelle vicinanze sono entità fisiche reali.
Circa i tre quarti delle galassie osservate durante l'ENACS risiedono nel gruppo dominante (l'ammasso); circa la metà del restante un quarto si trova in piccoli gruppi, e l'ultimo si trova nello spazio intermedio. Le galassie con linee di emissione nei loro spettri (le galassie a spirale) hanno la preferenza di trovarsi in piccoli gruppi o alla periferia dei ricchi ammassi.
Poiché la loro velocità media è proporzionale alla loro distanza, la distribuzione delle velocità medie dei gruppi in questo diagramma fornisce anche informazioni sulla distribuzione spaziale degli ammassi nell'universo.
