Una galassia ai margini dell'universo
Queste due foto mostrano la galassia estremamente distante con redshift z = 4.4, rilevato vicino a QSO 1202-07.
(a) L'immagine di sinistra è stata ottenuta con la camera CCD SUSI al telescopio dell'ESO NTT da 3,5 metri . È la somma di 6 singole esposizioni in colore rosso del campo di QSO 1202-07 con un tempo d'integrazione totale di 60 minuti. La maggior parte degli oggetti visibili sono galassie; i più deboli hanno ca. magnitudine rossa R = 26,5. L'immagine dell'oggetto più brillante simile a una stella al centro del campo è del QSO di 18° magnitudine. La galassia sulla linea di vista a un redshift di z = 4.4 è appena visibile, 2 arcsec a nord-ovest del QSO. Ciò corrisponde a ~ 12 kpc alla distanza cosmologica. La magnitudine rossa è R = 24,3. La Full Width Half Intensity delle immagini stellari nel fotogramma combinato è di 0,52 arcsec. Il nord è in alto e l'est a sinistra. La dimensione del campo è 45x45 arcsec.
(b) La foto a destra è dello stesso campo di (a), ma ora include 12 esposizioni singole con tempo d'integrazione totale di 120 minuti e quindi mostra oggetti ancora più deboli. Il QSO, così come una stella vicina (quadrante in alto a destra) che è stata usata per determinare la point spread function (la forma dell'immagine di un oggetto che si suppone puntiforme), sono stati sottratti dall'elaborazione delle immagini. Ciò consente una visione più chiara della galassia ad alto redshift che ora mostra alcune evidenze di una struttura, suggerendo una morfologia a spirale o irregolare.
