Il cacciatore di pianeti ESPRESSO si dirige verso il Cile

ESPRESSO, acronimo che sta per Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations (spettrografo echelle per le osservazioni spettroscopiche di pianeti rocciosi), ha superato il Preliminary Acceptance Europe (PAE) dell’ESO, ovvero ha completato con successo tutti i test preliminari e ora sarà impacchettato e spedito in Cile, dove sarà installato nel fuoco coudé combinato del Very Large Telescope (VLT). ESPRESSO dovrebbe vedere la prima luce alla fine del 2017.
ESPRESSO, uno spettrografo echelle, è uno degli strumenti attesi con più impazienza nel mondo astronomico [1]. È il successore del cacciatore di pianeti HARPS sul telescopio da 3,6 metri dell’ESO a La Silla e supererà la precisione di HARPS di circa 10 volte [2]. Come cacciatore di pianeti di nuova generazione, ESPRESSO misurerà i minuscoli cambiamenti nella luce delle stelle, causati da pianeti (alcuni dei quali più piccoli di Nettuno) che vi ruotano intorno. Il metodo della velocità radiale, come è noto, registra variazioni molto piccole nel moto di una stella, causate dall’influenza gravitazionale di un pianeta (la stella “oscilla” se il pianeta le ruota intorno). Più piccolo è il pianeta, più piccola è l’oscillazione ed è necessario uno strumento ad altissima precisione per rilevare esopianeti piccoli, rocciosi e che potrebbero potenzialmente ospitare la vita. Usando questo metodo, ESPRESSO potrà localizzare alcuni dei pianeti più piccoli che ci aspettiamo di trovare [3].
Così come HARPS, ESPRESSO sarà anche usato per osservazioni di follow-up dei candidati in transito (vale a dire quando un pianeta, visto dalla Terra, passa di fronte alla sua stella madre), per confermare la loro natura di pianeta e misurare la loro massa, oltre che per la spettroscopia di transito degli esopianeti. Quest’ultima tecnica di osservazione permette agli astronomi di determinare i componenti principali dell’atmosfera di un pianeta, come sodio o vapore acqueo.
ESPRESSO userà la luce raccolta da uno dei quattro UT (Unit Telescope) del VLT, ma sarà anche in grado di raccogliere la luce da tutti e quattro gli UT simultaneamente, usufruendo, quindi, di un'area di raccolta dela luce pari a quella di un telescopio di 16 metri di diametro e permettendogli di osservare oggetti molto deboli. Questo ci consentirà di esplorare i luoghi più reconditi dell’Universo osservando con alta precisione il mezzo intergalattico tra noi e quasar molto lontani, permettendoci di indagare se le costanti fisiche fondamentali sono cambiate nel tempo o nello spazio.

[2] Lo strumento HARPS riesce a misurare il moto di una stella con una precisione superiore a un metro per secondo, mentre ESPRESSO punterà a una precisione di pochi centimetri per secondo, grazie ai progressi della tecnologia e al suo posizionamento su un telescopio molto più grande.
[3] Il metodo della velocità radiale è molto importante se vogliamo conoscere le proprietà fisiche di un esopianeta, per esempio la sua massa. Combinando i risultati ottenuti con altri metodi, come il metodo del transito, si possono anche dedurre altre informazioni, quali la dimensione e la densità dell’esopianeta. Il telescopio NGTS (Next-Generation Transit Survey, ovvero strumento per survey di transito di nuova generazione) dell'ESO presso il Paranal caccia esopianeti usando il metodo del transito.
