Panning across Messier 83 in the infrared

This pan around the classic spiral galaxy Messier 83 seen in infrared light with the HAWK-I instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope gives a close look at some of the details. As well as showing the structure of the galaxy without the obscuring effect of dust huge numbers of stars within the galaxy are revealed.
