VISTA at night (Pano-VT version)
This magnificent image shows ESO's Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), located at the Paranal Observatory. The Milky Way galaxy sweeps behind the telescope with several nebulas visible, like the Gum and the Carina. But there’s much more to see in this picture. Jupiter appears as the brightest spot; just above the open dome of VISTA is Alpha Centauri and the Gegenschein is also there. The hill in the background is the site for ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), right below the Large Magellanic Cloud. Beautiful airglow on the horizon gives the final touch to this “painting”.
