ESO Movie 07: EMMI – Explorer of the Southern Sky

The 3.5-m New Technology Telescope (NTT) is the most technically advanced telescope in the world.

However, in order to fully exploit the potential of this telescope, sophisticated auxiliary instruments have been developed at ESO. One such device is EMMI, a unique multi-purpose astronomical instrument, which is capable of direct imaging as well as of spectroscopy, and which can cover several spectral bands simultaneously.

This film describes the development and the capabilities of this complex instrument, which consists of more than 100.000 individual parts.
