Alles doppelt
Etwa 95 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt steht im südlichen Sternbild Octans (der Oktant) NGC 7098 – eine faszinierende Spiralgalaxie mit einer Reihe von Doppelstrukturen. Die erste davon ist ein Duo aus ringähnlichen Strukturen, die den galaktischen Kern umlagern. Das sind die Spiralarme von NGC 7098, die sich um den hellen galaktischen Kern aufgewickelt haben. Die helle Zentralregion enthält eine zweite Doppelstruktur: einen Doppelbalken.
NGC 7098 hat auch Strukturen ausgebildet, die man als Ansae (lat.: Griff) bezeichnet, die man als schmale helle Streifen auf beiden Seiten der Zentralregion erkennt. Ansae sind Bereiche höherer Sterndichte – sie sind normalerweise als geschwungene, gerade oder kreisförmige Strukturen und man findet sie in den Außenbereichen planetarer Ringsysteme, in Gaswolken und – wie in im Falle von NGC 7098 – in dichtbesetzten Galaxien.
Diese Bild entstand aus Daten, die am FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS) Instrument aufgenommen wurden, das am Very Large Telescope der ESO am Paranal Observatorium installiert ist. Man sieht weiterhin eine Schar weiterer weit entfernter Galaxien, davon am auffälligsten die kleine, von der Kante her sichtbare Spiralgalaxie links von NGC 7098, die unter der Bezeichnung PGC 246235 bekannt ist.
