Galaxen PJ0116-24 observerad med VLT och ALMA
Denna veckas bild visar den avlägsna galaxen PJ0116-24, en så kallad hyperluminös infraröd galax (HyLIRG). HyLIRGs är mycket ljusstarka galaxer tack vare den extremt intensiv stjärnbildningen som sker i dem. Men vad sätter igång stjärnbildningen?
Tidigare studier har indikerat att extrema galaxer av detta slag är resultatet av galaxsammanslagningar. Sådana galaxkollisioner tros skapa täta områden av gas där intensiv stjärnbildning utlöses. Men isolerade galaxer kan också bli HyLIRGs enbart via interna processer om stjärnbildande gas snabbt kan ledas mot galaxens centrum.
I en ny artikel av Daizhong Lius forskargrupp (Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics) kombinerades observationer från ESO:s Very Large Telescope (VLT) och Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) för att studera gasrörelser i PJ0116-24. ALMA ser den kalla gasen, här i blått, medan VLT med det nya ERIS-instrumentet (Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph) ser den varma gasen, här i rött. Tack vare dessa detaljerade observationer upptäckte forskarna att gasen i denna extrema galax roterade på ett organiserat sätt, snarare än på det kaotiska sätt som förväntas efter en galaxkollision – ett överraskande resultat! Detta visar att sammanslagningar inte alltid är nödvändiga för att en galax ska bli en HyLIRG.
PJ0116-24 är så långt borta att dess ljus tar cirka 10 miljarder år att nå oss. Lyckligtvis fungerar en förgrundsgalax (som inte ses här) som en gravitationslins som böjer och förstärker ljuset från den mer avlägsna PJ0116-24, och då bildar den så kallade Einsteinring som syns här. Denna exakta kosmiska upplinjering gör att astronomer kan zooma in på mycket avlägsna objekt och studera dem på en detaljnivå som annars skulle vara mycket svår att uppnå.
