Skymningsvy över Paranal
ESO:s Very Large Telescope är ett av de mest avancerade observatorierna i världen. Från den ensliga bergstoppen Cerro Paranal i Chiles Atacamaöken fångas astronomiska data av enastående kvalitet. Detta isolerade hörn av jordens yta bjuder på de torraste och klaraste förhållandena på jorden – vissa av väderstationerna i Atacamaöknen har aldrig uppmätt någon nederbörd – och total avsaknad av ljusföroreningar. Stjärnskådare på Paranal kan se stjärnorna redan innan solen har gått ner, samtidigt som den nedåtgående solen lyser upp den lätta markfrosten och observatoriebyggnaderna med sitt glödande sken.
Men ensligheten har också sina nackdelar. Att nå denna avlägsna plats är inte helt lätt. Det finns inga allmänna transporter till Paranal och besökare måste köra 110 kilometer söderut från Antofagastas flygplats för att nå dit. Men Miguel Claro, en av ESO:s fotoambassadörer, visar med denna mäktiga bild att den långa resan lönar sig.
VLT utgörs av hela åtta teleskop varav sju är synliga i detta panorama. De fyra 8,2-metersteleskopen ryms i de stora lådlika byggnaderna, medan fyra mindre 1,8-meters Auxiliary Telescopes huserar i de små öppna kupolerna till vänster i bild. Dessa mindre teleskop kan förflyttas, vilket gör VLT till en högst anpassningsbar interferometer. Med denna teknik kan data från flera olika teleskop kombineras så att de bildar ett mycket större teleskop, med enorma vinster för de vetenskapliga observationerna.
