De första segmenten i världens största teleskopspegel får en skinande ny yta

Konstruktionen av ESO:s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) i den chilenska Atacamaöknen har nått en ny milstolpe: ingenjörerna vid ESO:s Paranal Observatory har lagt ett högreflekterande lager och monterat speciella sensorer, på de första segmenten av teleskopets primärspegel. Denna ytbeläggning innebär att segmenten nu är i princip redo att börja observera himlen, när de väl har installerats i hjärtat av världens största optiska teleskop senare detta årtionde.
Den 39 meter stora primärspegeln i ESO:s ELT, som går under beteckningen M1, kommer att vara den överlägset största spegeln som någonsin tillverkats för ett teleskop. Den består av 798 sexkantiga glaskeramiska segment, var och en cirka fem centimeter tjockt och 1,5 meter i diameter. Spegelsegmenten tillverkas i Europa i en process där i flera steg där flera nationer deltar. De första 18 segmenten tog sig över havet till Paranal tidigare i år och ytbeläggningen är nästa steg på deras resa - en milstolpe som tre segment nu har nått.
Att belägga ett spegelsegment i M1 är en komplex process som tar cirka två timmar. Förutom det reflekterande skiktet, som använder 1,7 gram silver, innehåller beläggningen ytterligare skikt av nickelkrom och kiselnitrid för att förbättra vidhäftningen till spegelämnet och skydda silvret från luftens påverkan. Sammantaget är beläggningen cirka 120 nanometer tjock eller ungefär tusen gånger tunnare än ett människohår.
För att säkerställa att alla segment kan fungera tillsammans som en enda spegel är de utrustade med sensorer för att kunna mäta orienteringen. Förutom den nya beläggningen på de första M1-segmenten har ESO-ingenjörerna även installerat kantsensorer, två på varje sida av de hexagonala segmenten, och integrerat den elektronik och de mekaniska stöd som behövs för att de ska fungera. Slutligen har segmenten de inspekterats och kontrollerats för att säkerställa att de är redo att installeras på ESO:s ELT. Hela processen äger rum i ett renrum på ELT Technical Facility på Paranal, där antalet partiklar i luften begränsas för att undvika kontaminering
Denna beläggnings- och integrationsprocedur kommer att genomföras för alla övriga M1-segment. Att noggrant testa och dokumentera processen för de tre första segmenten var nyckeln för att säkerställa att verksamheten kan accelerera när nya segment anländer till Paranal.
När teleskopet väl är i drift kommer beläggningen att göras om för varje segment var 18:e månad för att säkerställa bästa reflektionsförmåga och känslighet. I praktiken innebär detta att två segment kommer att behöva beläggas varje dag under hela teleskopets livstid. För att underlätta detta med minimal störning av de vetenskapliga observationerna tillverkas ytterligare 133 segment, utöver de 798 som behövs för spegeln. Världens största öga på himlen är redo att angripa de djupaste astronomiska utmaningarna i vår tid och utlovar banbrytande upptäckter när observationerna påbörjas senare detta årtionde.
