Las nubes de Júpiter no están compuestas de hielo de amoníaco
Durante mucho tiempo, la comunidad astronómica creyó que las nubes superiores de Júpiter, que forman los icónicos cinturones de color marrón pálido del planeta, estaban compuestas de amoníaco congelado. Pero un nuevo estudio, en el que han participado astrónomos aficionados y profesionales, ha demostrado que la posición de estas nubes en la atmósfera está situada más abajo de lo que pensábamos y están hechas de algo completamente diferente: muy probablemente hidrosulfuro de amonio mezclado con niebla tóxica.
Steve Hill, astrónomo aficionado, demostró previamente que podía mapear la atmósfera del planeta usando solo filtros coloreados de manera específica aplicados al telescopio de su patio trasero. Estos resultados proporcionaron pistas iniciales de que las nubes estaban a demasiada profundidad, dentro de la cálida atmósfera de Júpiter, como para encajar con la idea de que eran nubes hechas de hielo de amoníaco. Para comprobarlo, Hill unió fuerzas con Patrick Irwin, de la Universidad de Oxford, cuyo equipo había utilizado previamente el sofisticado instrumento MUSE, instalado en el Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO, para estudiar la atmósfera de gigantes gaseosos.
MUSE es capaz de escanear la atmósfera de Júpiter en diferentes longitudes de onda, mapeando las diferentes moléculas que componen la atmósfera del planeta. Esta imagen animada, basada en datos reales de MUSE, muestra cómo se ve el gigante gaseoso en diferentes longitudes de onda.
El nuevo estudio muestra que este nuevo enfoque, usando tanto telescopios aficionados como el VLT/MUSE, puede mapear la abundancia de amoníaco presente en la atmósfera de Júpiter con una precisión sorprendente. En cuanto a las nubes, el equipo concluyó que la atmósfera de Júpiter es muy parecida a una tarta hecha por capas. Nubes de hidrosulfuro de amonio cubren las capas superiores, pero a veces puede haber una decoración de nubes de hielo de amoníaco, llevadas a la parte superior por una fuerte convección vertical. Sin embargo, la estructura completa de la tarta aún no se conoce del todo, y el trabajo de la comunidad de astrónomos y astrónomas aficionadas será clave para descubrirlo. Así que la próxima vez que mire a Júpiter o Saturno desde su patio trasero, es posible que también esté desentrañando los secretos que aún yacen dentro de nuestro Sistema Solar.
