Un maestro del camuflaje cósmico
¿Ves el camaleón en esta imagen? ¿No? Bueno, ¡está camuflado! Sí, es una broma, pero la imagen de la semana muestra la nebulosa Chamaeleon (Camaleón) o IC 2631. En el hemisferio sur, esta nebulosa es visible la mayor parte del año y se puede admirar en esta imagen en luz infrarroja que captó el telescopio de sondeo VISTA.
IC 2631 es una nebulosa de reflexión formada por nubes de polvo que reflejan la luz emitida por estrellas cercanas, principalmente por una de las más jóvenes, masivas y brillantes de su vecindario, HD 97300, visible en el centro a la derecha de la imagen. De hecho, esta nebulosa es la más brillante del Complejo Chamaeleon, una vasta región de nubes de gas y polvo, mucho más grande de lo que se aprecia en la imagen, en la que existen numerosas estrellas recién nacidas y aún en formación.
La nube que se ve aquí está llena de la materia necesaria para la formación estelar: gas y polvo. En longitudes de onda ópticas, esta región contiene manchas oscuras en las que el polvo bloquea completamente la luz de las fuentes del fondo, pero esta imagen fue captada en luz infrarroja, que puede atravesar el polvo casi sin obstáculos, lo cual permite a los científicos observar el núcleo de esta nube.
