El centro de operaciones de ALMA: un oasis en el desierto
Al final del largo y sinuoso camino que ven en esta imagen, está el Centro de Operaciones (OSF, Operational Support Facility) de ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array).
El OSF sirve como campamento base, tanto para los contratistas como para el personal que trabaja en ALMA, y sus instalaciones son el centro de todas las actividades científicas relacionadas con la operación diaria de ALMA.
Más allá del campamento de ALMA podemos ver el blanco salar conocido como El Salar de Atacama, el más grande de Chile. Hacia el horizonte vemos la montaña conocida como Cerro Quitor y en sus alrededores se encuentra el Pukará de Quitor, una antigua ciudadela fortificada precolombina.
Esta fotografía fue tomada por el fotógrafo José Velásquez a 4.660 metros sobre el nivel del mar durante un domingo de caminata que le llevó desde el Cerro de Macón hasta el centro de operaciones del conjunto de antenas de ALMA (el AOS, Array Operations Site).
ALMA es el mayor proyecto astronómico existente y un auténtico proyecto de colaboración global entre Europa, América del Norte y Asia Oriental, en cooperación con la República de Chile. El año pasado, ALMA fue inaugurado durante una ceremonia oficial que marcó la finalización de todos los sistemas principales del conjunto y la transición formal de un proyecto en construcción a un observatorio de pleno derecho.
