Nueva imagen del cometa ISON
Esta nueva imagen del cometa C/2012 S1 (ISON) fue tomada con el telescopio nacional TRAPPIST instalado en el Observatorio La Silla de ESO en la mañana del 15 de noviembre de 2013. El cometa ISON se localizó por primera vez en nuestros cielos en septiembre de 2012, y tendrá su momento de máximo acercamiento al Sol a finales de noviembre de 2013.
TRAPPIST ha estado monitorizando al cometa ISON desde mediados de octubre, utilizando filtros de banda ancha como los usados en esta imagen. También ha estado utilizando filtros de banda estrecha especiales que aislan la emisión de varios gases, permitiendo a los astrónomos contar cuántas moléculas de cada tipo se desprenden del cometa.
El cometa ISON estaba bastante tranquilo hasta el 1 de noviembre de 2013, cuando un primer estallido dobló la cantidad de gas emitida por el cometa. El 13 de noviembre, justo antes de tomar esta imagen, un segundo y gigantesco estallido sacudió al cometa, incrementando su actividad en un factor diez. Ahora es lo suficientemente brillante como para verlo con unos prismáticos desde un lugar oscuro, en los cielos del amanecer mirando hacia el este. A lo largo de las últimas noches, el cometa se ha estabilizado en su nuevo nivel de actividad.
Estos estallidos fueron causados por el intenso calor del Sol que alcanza al hielo que se encuentra en elminúsculo núcleo del cometa a medida que éste se acerca al astro, provocando que el hielo se sublime y lanzando grandes cantidades de polvo y gas al espacio. Para cuando ISON se acerce a su punto máximo al Sol el 28 de noviembre (a tan solo 1,2 millones de kilómetros de su superficie — ¡solo un poco menos del diámetro del Sol!), el calor hará que aún más hielo sublime. Sin embargo, también podría romper todo el núcleo en pequeños frangemtos, que se evaporarían completamente cuando el cometa se aleje del intenso calor del Sol. Si ISON sobrevive a su acercamiento al Sol, se colverá impresionantemente brillante en el cielo del amanecer.
La imagen es una composición de cuatro exposiciones diferentes de 30 segundos con filtros azul, verde, rojo e infrarrojo. A medida que el cometa se movía frente a las estrellas del fondo, estas aparecen como puntos de múltiples colores.
TRAPPIST (TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope) se dedica al estudio de sistemas planetarios a través de dos métodos: la detección y caracterización de planetas situados fuera del Sistema Solar (exoplanetas), y el estudio de cometas orbitando el Sol. El telescopio nacional de 60 cm se opera desde una sala de control en Lieja (Bélgica), a 12.000 kilómetros de distancia.
