Coating chamber

This is a view of the top part of the coating chamber, during the preparations for the coating of the third 8.2-m mirror. The magnetron is well visible. For the coating process, the top part is placed on the lower part in which the mirror rests and the chamber is closed. The magnetron heats blocks of ultra-pure aluminium to vaporization and aluminium atoms are deposited on the mirror surface.
