La fina sombra del sombrero*
Imagen de la famosa galaxia espiral temprana Messier 104, más conocida como “El Sombrero" debido a su forma particular. El "Sombrero" está situado en la constelación de Virgo (la Virgen), a una distancia de unos 50 millones de años luz.
Messier 104 es el objeto número 104 del famoso catálogo de nebulosas del astrónomo francés Charles Messier (1730-1817). No fue incluida en las dos primeras ediciones (con 45 objetos en 1774 y 103 en 1781), pero poco después Mesiser la añadió a mano en su copia personal, definiéndola como una "nebulosa muy débil". El primero en medir la velocidad de recesión, de unos 1.000 km por segundo, fue el astrónomo estadounidense Vesto M. Slipher desde el Observatorio Lowell en 1912; también fue el primero en detectar la rotación de la galaxia.
Esta galaxia destaca por su predominante protuberancia central, compuesta principalmente de estrellas maduras, y por su disco casi de canto formado por estrellas, gas y polvo intrincadamente estructurado. La complejidad de este polvo y la alta resolución de la imagen son más evidentes justo delante del brillante núcleo, pero también quedan patentes en los oscuros y absorbentes carriles que cruzan el disco. Pese a su masivo núcleo, al otro extremo lejano de la fuente puede verse una parte importante del disco de la galaxia.
En el halo de Messier 104, como si de un enjambre se tratara, se distingue un gran número de pequeñas fuentes ligeramente difusas. La mayoría son cúmulos globulares, similares a los que existen en nuestra propia galaxia.
Esta foto fue obtenida con el instrumento multimodal FORS1, instalado en el telescopio ANTU del VLT, el 30 de enero de 2000. Es una composición hecha a partir de tres exposiciones en diferentes bandas de frecuencia. El norte está arriba y el este a la izquierda.

Se obtuvieron a las 6:20 UT el 30 de enero de 2000, a través de banda V (longitud de onda central 554 nm; anchura a media altura (FWHM) a 112 nm); tiempo de exposición 120 segundos; renderizado como azul); banda R (657 nm; 150 nm FWHM; 120 segundos; verde) y banda I (768 nm; 138 nm FWHM, 240 segundos; rojo). El seeing era de 0,6–0,7 segundos de arco.
