Se entierra cápsula del tiempo en el Extremely Large Telescope de ESO

La semana pasada, en una ceremonia realizada en el sitio de construcción del Extremely Large Telescope de ESO (ELT), en Cerro Armazones, desierto de Atacama, Chile, se enterró una cápsula del tiempo que conmemora al personal de ESO, la ciencia, tecnología y cooperación entre ESO y Chile.
La cápsula se había sellado durante la ceremonia de la primera piedra en 2017, cuando se inició la construcción del futuro “ojo más grande del mundo para mirar el cielo”. Como mensaje simbólico para las generaciones futuras, contiene recuerdos de autoridades chilenas, incluyendo una placa de parte de la entonces Presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, sobre la apertura de los cielos del país para las interrogantes de todo el planeta, como también dibujos de niños chilenos que ilustran el Universo, los telescopios de ESO y paisajes del norte de Chile. La cápsula también incluye un mosaico de fotografías de miembros del personal de ESO y una copia de un libro que describe los futuros objetivos científicos del telescopio [1]. Lo cubre un hexágono grabado fabricado con Zerodur®, con un modelo a escala 1:5 de uno de los segmentos del espejo primario del ELT.
La semana pasada, miembros del Consejo de ESO y personal visitaron el sitio del ELT para enterrar la cápsula en la pared de la cúpula del ELT, en un evento encabezado por Linda Tacconi (Alemania), Presidenta del Consejo de ESO y la Vicepresidenta, Mirjam Lieshout-Vijverberg (Países Bajos). Unos días más tarde, en un evento separado, un segundo grupo de miembros del Consejo, liderado por Rafael Bachiller (España) y Jan Buriánek (República Checa) instalaron una placa conmemorativa en la pared donde está enterrada la cápsula.
Recientemente, la construcción del ELT superó el 50% hasta su finalización, y está bien encaminado para comenzar sus operaciones científicas a finales de esta década. Este hito ocurre en el año en que ESO y Chile conmemoran 60 años de su asociación, que ha permitido el establecimiento de observatorios únicos en el desierto de Atacama y la consolidación de una fuerte comunidad científica.
El ELT será el telescopio óptico e infrarrojo de mayor envergadura del mundo y cambiará nuestra comprensión del Universo. Sus objetivos científicos abarcan desde el sistema solar hasta el borde el universo observable, incluyendo exoplanetas, agujeros negros y las primeras estrellas y galaxias. Intentará responder algunas de las principales interrogantes en astronomía: ¿Existe vida en otras partes del Universo? ¿Cuál es la naturaleza de la materia oscura y la energía oscura? ¿Las leyes de la naturaleza son universales? También podrá responder preguntas aún desconocidas: ¿quién sabe qué habrá descubierto el ELT cuando se abra la cápsula?

[1] La cápsula del tiempo del ELT contiene el siguiente material:
- Una placa de vidrio de parte de la ex Presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, grabada con la frase: “Abriendo el cielo de Chile a las preguntas de todo un planeta”
- Una lapicera conmemorativa de parte del Gobierno Regional, Región de Antofagasta.
- Seis dibujos de escolares chilenos de Antofagasta y Taltal, que representan paisajes del norte de Chile, objetos astronómicos y telescopios de ESO.
