Comienzan trabajos para las fundaciones del ELT en Cerro Armazones

Han comenzado las excavaciones para las fundaciones de la estructura y la cúpula del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de ESO, en Cerro Armazones, a una altura de más de 3000 metros en el Desierto de Atacama en Chile. Las obras están a cargo del Consorcio ACe, conformado por Astaldi y Cimolai. Para señalar este acontecimiento, el fotógrafo embajador de ESO, Gerhard Hüdepohl, obtuvo estas increíbles imágenes mediante un drone sobre Cerro Armazones.
Llamado ELT, por su nombre en inglés, Extremely Large Telescope o Telescopio Extremadamente Grande, este revolucionario y nuevo concepto de telescopio basado en tierra tendrá un espejo primario de 39 metros y será el telescopio óptico e infrarrojo cercano más grande del mundo: "el mayor ojo hacia el cielo". La construcción está programada para finalizar a tiempo para la primera luz, prevista para el 2024. No es fácil trabajar a gran altura, pero las ventajas serán enormes; el lugar es alto, seco y está lejos de la contaminación lumínica, brindando condiciones de seeing realmente excelentes que permitirán a los astrónomos explorar los misterios del cosmos como nunca antes.
El contorno de la estructura principal del telescopio se aprecia claramente y, cuando se haya terminado, dicho contorno estará cubierto por una cúpula de 80 metros de altura. El pozo circular de 55 metros de diámetro, al centro, eventualmente contendrá las fundaciones de la estructura que darán soporte al colosal espejo primario de 39 metros, por el cual se ha designado al ELT. Esta fotografía también ilustra claramente la gran envergadura del telescopio. Los diversos vehículos de la construcción se ven diminutos en comparación con el tamaño imponente de las fundaciones del ELT, y las personas dispersas por el sitio casi son invisibles.
Cerro Armazones está a solo 22 kilómetros de distancia del actual observatorio insignia de ESO, el Very Large Telescope (VLT), lo cual permite divisar a un sitio desde el otro, y el traslado en vehículo tarda aproximadamente 30 minutos. Esta cercanía permite al ELT hacer uso de la infraestructura e instalaciones que actualmente se utilizan para el VLT. De hecho, casi se eligió a Cerro Armazones para albergar al VLT, pero finalmente se optó por Cerro Paranal. Con la construcción ahora en marcha, pronto tendrá un telescopio propio.
