ESOcast 48: Construyendo a lo grande
Octavo y último capítulo especial para conmemorar el 50 aniversario de ESO

Con motivo de la celebración del 50 aniversario de ESO en octubre de 2012, editamos ocho capítulos especiales de la serie ESOcasts, que forman parte de la película “De Europa a las Estrellas – Los Primeros 50 Años de ESO Explorando el Cielo Austral” (Europe to the Stars — ESO’s First 50 Years of Exploring the Southern Sky).
El octavo y último capítulo de esta serie relata cómo ESO — basándose en la experiencia adquirida a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años, consolidándose como el observatorio más potente de la historia — va a hacer realidad el eterno anhelo de los astrónomos: la construcción de telescopios cada vez más grandes.
El primero de la próxima generación de telescopios de ESO, ubicado en el Llano de Chajnantor, está casi acabado. Cuando esté completado, en el año 2013, el conjunto ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), un proyecto en el que participan Europa, América del Norte y Asia, estará compuesto de 66 antenas de alta precisión. Actuando juntas, como si de un solo telescopio se tratase, las antenas del conjunto ALMA revelarán los detalles más finos del universo frío, capturando el nacimiento de las primeras galaxias y buceando en el interior de las polvorientas nubes de gas molecular — guarderías estelares donde nacen nuevas estrellas y planetas.
Mientras que ALMA está casi a punto de ser terminada y ya ofrece resultados científicos sorprendentes, a la joya de la corona de ESO aún le faltan algunos años. El E-ELT, el Telescopio Europeo Extremadamente Grande (European Extremely Large Telescope) será el mayor ojo del mundo para mirar al cielo. Con un espejo primario de 39 metros de diámetro, el E-ELT hará que cualquier telescopio precedente parezca pequeño. El E-ELT será una poderosa herramienta para ayudar a encontrar vida en algún otro lugar del universo, buscando biomarcadores en las atmósferas de los planetas tipo Tierra que orbitan estrellas distantes. El E-ELT también será capaz de capturar la luz de objetos muy débiles y distantes, desvelando información sobre la historia temprana del universo, cuando las primeras estrellas empezaron a brillar.
