Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016 - fulldome show
Inaugurated during the International Year of Astronomy 2009, the Astronomy Photographer of the Year is an annual competition looking to find the most stunning and breathtaking images of galaxies, aurorae, the Moon, Sun, planets and more. Open to amateur and professional astronomy photographers alike, the competition is organised by the National Maritime Museum and sponsored by Insight Investment and the BBC's Sky at Night.
Images like these are an invaluable tool with which to inspire a love of astronomy in others. Each year the Royal Observatory Greenwich creates a short planetarium presentation to show off some of the winners and runners up from the competition (as well as some of our personal favourites) and each year we try to distribute that show as widely as we can so that these amazing pictures can be seen by as many people as possible.
Here, a selection of entries from the 2016 competition are displayed in an immersive fulldome show — such as could be shown in planetariums worldwide, including in the upcoming ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre in Garching, Munich.
